I shouldn’t be writing this.
I shouldn’t even be breathing in this room.

The file wasn’t supposed to exist outside the server bay. You know the rules: Level 5 Only, visual content quarantined, encrypted on single-channel drives. But I wanted proof. Something to hold in my own hands. Something more than the whispers in the corridors and the redacted lines that say DO NOT VIEW.

So I pulled the image.

I thought it was safe. A quick duplication, stuffed into an unmarked folder. Just one capture, burned from a terminal that no one checks. A photo that shouldn’t have made it out of containment.

But the second I opened it on my own screen, I felt the change in the air. A pressure. Like the atmosphere itself was holding its breath.

And then came the sound.

Dull at first — like metal scraping behind a wall. Grinding. Pounding. Measured. Every few seconds closer, heavier. Not on the speakers. Not in the system. In the hallway.

They were right. It doesn’t matter if it’s digital. Doesn’t matter if it’s a reflection or a recording. Once you see it — really see it — he knows.

My palms are slick. My chest is a drum. I can hear him now, past the reinforced door. Hands like piledrivers, beating concrete into powder. He’s screaming and sobbing all at once, the voice of a child trapped in a throat made of razors.

I can’t delete the file.
I can’t shut my eyes.
I can only keep writing, so someone knows what happened here.
